Kolb hurts knee
in off-field slip
PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Kevin Kolb injured his left knee Saturday when he slipped on a wet rubber mat while running between fields at Bills training camp.
Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone says the injury is not serious and expects the quarterback to return to practice — and his competition with E.J. Manuel for the starting job — within days.
Kolb was hurt while going from one field to another with his offensive teammates. As he ran, Kolb slipped on a wet rubber mat and stumbled awkwardly at the Bills training camp facility in suburban Rochester on Saturday.
Though Kolb did not fall, he had trouble standing and put his arm around the shoulder of head trainer Bud Carpenter. Kolb then tossed down his helmet in frustration, before sitting down on the field.
Carpenter briefly examined Kolb’s knee before escorting him to the locker room. Workers then began sweeping water off the mats, which were in a tunnel between fields. The mats provided little traction, especially for players wearing cleats.
Kolb is entering his seventh NFL season after signing a two-year contract with Buffalo in free agency in April. Kolb was counting on kick starting his career in Buffalo after injuries contributed to him losing the starting job in both Philadelphia and the past two seasons in Arizona.
New Cards coach
wants Peterson
on offense
GLENDALE, Ariz. — Patrick Peterson is catching passes, throwing some and running with the ball during training camp.
No doubt about it, new Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians has plans for the dynamic player on offense.
In his first two NFL seasons, Peterson made the Pro Bowl as a punt returner, then as a cornerback. He remains a shutdown cornerback, first and foremost. And he still plans to return punts.
But Arians says Peterson is too talented to be standing on the sideline all the time when the Cardinals have the ball.
Peterson is all for it. He says he knows can make things happen with the ball in his hands, regardless of how it gets there.
Two world records broken at swimming championships
BARCELONA — Teenagers Missy Franklin and Katie Ledecky starred Saturday at the 15th FINA world championships as two world records were broken and a teary Cesar Cielo secured his third 50m freestyle title in a row.
Franklin, 18, equaled the highest number of gold medals won at a single competition as she won her fifth gold in Barcelona, taking the 200m backstroke in a time of 2:04.76.
Silver went to Australian Belinda Hocking, while Canada’s Hilary Caldwell won bronze.
Ledecky broke her second world record of the meet, winning the 800m freestyle in 8:13.86 in a near repeat of the 1,500m final, where she also set a world record, the 16-year-old was lying second behind Lotte Friis for most of the race.
The Dane went on to win silver, while New Zealand’s Lauren Boyle took bronze, as she had in the 1,500m.
Also swimming her second world record of the competition was Lithuanian 16-year-old Ruta Meilutyte, who won her semi-final in the women’s 50m breaststroke in 29.48, beating the mark that Russian Yuliya Efimova had set in the heats on Saturday morning.
World record holder Cesar Cielo, meanwhile, secured his third world championship 50m freestyle title in a row, winning in 21.32 and beating Russian Vladimir Morozov by 0.15 seconds. The bronze went to George Bovell from Trinidad and Tobago, who repeated his performance from the 2004 Olympics.
Dempsey set
to move to MLS
LONDON — Clint Dempsey is returning to Major League Soccer, ending his six-year spell in English soccer.
The 30-year-old Dempsey played for the New England Revolution from 2004-06 before joining Fulham in 2007. He moved to Tottenham last summer and scored 12 goals in 43 games, but wasn’t a regular.
“We have reached agreement with Major League Soccer for the transfer of Clint Dempsey,” Spurs said in a statement Saturday. “We wish Clint every success for the future.”
Tottenham didn’t say what team Dempsey was going to, but reports had him linked to the Seattle Sounders. The Sounders cleared one of their three designated player slots earlier this week when midfielder Shalrie Joseph restructured his contract to no longer be counted as a designated player.
The team website also asked fans to arrive 15 minutes early to Saturday night’s game against FC Dallas for what the club called a “special presentation.”
Dempsey raved about Seattle when the city hosted the U.S. against Panama in a World Cup qualifier in June.
Wind suspends
3rd round at
Women’s British
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — Inbee Park was hopeful of tough conditions to help her make up an eight-shot deficit at the Women’s British Open.
It turned out to be too tough.
An hour before the leaders were to tee off Saturday, play was suspended because of wind so strong that balls were not stopping on the green. Of the nine players who finished their rounds, the best score was a 75.
Park, going after a record fourth professional major in the same year, was 1-under through four holes.
St. Andrews is one of the most difficult links courses in Britain when the wind is strong. The second round at St. Andrews for the British Open was suspended briefly in 2010, the day Rory McIlroy shot 80 one day after his record-tying 63.
